I've had crashes like that, too. Also strange behavior with the user interface where some modifier keys would not work. In some of those cases, restarting PC did not help, but restarting my Mac always fixed it. Zipping up a working version is a good idea, but I always assumed I could effectively do the same restore using TIme Machine.
